For Editors Canada, staying connected is at the heart of what we do.

As a national membership association representing editors and communication professionals across the country, collaboration happens every day between staff, volunteers, members, and affiliates. We rely on technology to keep those connections going, whether we are sharing files, coordinating meetings, managing information, or simply staying in touch.

But a few years ago, our aging email system and inconsistent file-sharing tools were making that harder than it needed to be.

We knew we needed a better way to work together, so we turned to Heartfelt IT.

Finding a Better Way to Work Together

Our goal was straightforward: bring our email and information systems into one reliable, centralized platform that would make collaboration easier for our staff and volunteers.

Heartfelt IT helped us migrate to Google Workspace, bringing our email, calendars, storage, and collaborative tools together.

From the beginning, their team handled the migration and setup from start to finish. The transition caused minimal disruption to our day-to-day work, allowing us to continue focusing on our members and our work while the technology changes were taking place behind the scenes.

Today, the difference is significant.

We have reliable email, shared drives where staff and volunteers can collaborate and store important files, and tools that make meetings and group discussions easier to organize.

More importantly, having our information centralized helps us preserve institutional knowledge.

For an organization like ours, where volunteers and personnel can change over time, that continuity matters. The information and resources we build together need to remain accessible and organized, even as the people working with them change.

From a Migration to a Lasting Partnership

What started as a technology migration has grown into an ongoing partnership.

Supporting the Editing Profession Across Canada

Editors Canada has a long history of supporting high standards in editing and bringing professionals together.

The organization began in 1979 as the Freelance Editors’ Association of Canada. In 1994, the word “Freelance” was dropped as the association expanded its focus to serve both freelance and in-house editors.

Today, Editors Canada is the only national editorial association in Canada, bringing together salaried and freelance editors and communication professionals working across corporate, technical, government, not-for-profit, and publishing sectors.

Through professional development, certification, conferences, seminars, webinars, and networking opportunities, we continue to help editors develop their skills and connect with others in the profession.

We have four regional branches—British Columbia, Toronto, Ottawa–Gatineau, and Quebec—as well as smaller branches, known as twigs, in Atlantic Canada, Barrie, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton-Halton, Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph, and Manitoba.

What We're Working On Now

Our work continues to evolve.

Registration is currently open for the 2026 exams for Editors Canada Professional Certification, the first program of its kind in Canada. The program recognizes editors who have achieved a level of excellence in their craft.

In 2026, editors can pursue designations as a Certified Copy Editor, Certified Stylistic Editor, or Certified Professional Editor. Since the program launched, more than 300 professional certifications have been awarded to editors across Canada and beyond: http://editors.ca/certification

We have also recently launched a free handbook, Editing with Respect: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion 2026. The handbook explores the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion in writing and provides considerations and recommended practices for editing diverse material thoughtfully and sensitively.

These initiatives are part of our continued work to support editors and strengthen the profession.

And behind all of that work is a simple need: people need to be able to connect, communicate, and share knowledge effectively.

For Editors Canada, having the right technology in place has helped make that possible.
