Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant Success: How Heartfelt IT Helped SFOA Build a Stronger Technology Future

For more than 20 years, the Société franco-ontarienne de l’autisme (SFOA) has been supporting autistic people and their families in Ontario's Francophone community.

As a registered charitable organization, SFOA provides programs, resources, activities, and community support designed specifically for French-speaking families. Today, its programs reach children and families across the Ottawa area, creating safe, inclusive spaces where participants can learn, grow, build confidence, and connect with others.

But behind every community organization is another story—one that isn't always visible to the people benefiting from its programs.

For SFOA, that story involved funding uncertainty, limited reserves, volunteers, and a technology infrastructure that desperately needed attention.

And eventually, that led to an Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant.

When a Growing Organization Can't Afford to Grow Its Technology

SFOA shared with Heartfelt IT that one of its biggest challenges was the unpredictability of its funding.

Much of its funding is program-specific and needs to be renewed each year. Sometimes the organization receives the amount it requests. Sometimes funding is refused. Other times, it receives less than it requested or needs.

That uncertainty made long-term planning difficult.

For years, SFOA had maintained financial reserves to provide a safety net. But by the end of 2023, that buffer had almost entirely disappeared.

In 2024, the organization made difficult adjustments. Administrative staff were reduced, and volunteers stepped up to keep the organization moving. Those efforts resulted in a surplus. Even then, the organization's ability to invest in technology remained limited.

SFOA explained that if additional funding for its IT needs wasn't available, the organization would have to continue relying on volunteers to help manage its technology—something it had been doing for more than 20 years.

For a nonprofit focused on serving its community, that isn't an ideal long-term solution.

The organization needed a way to strengthen its technology without taking resources away from the people and programs it serves.

The Search for an Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant

That's where Heartfelt IT saw an opportunity to help.

In late June 2025, the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Seed Grant (Seed Grants | Piloting New Ideas and Programs), which is designed to help organizations "build capacity and prepare for future programming". The work and support that Heartfelt IT provided to the SFOA fit perfectly within that objective. The application process presented an opportunity for organizations seeking funding to strengthen their operations and community impact.

Heartfelt IT began reaching out to organizations that could potentially benefit from grant funding for technology and infrastructure.

Nearly 100 organizations were contacted.

15 expressed interest.

10 moved forward.

And ultimately, 5 continued through the application process.

Among them was SFOA.

The application process required careful preparation, communication, documentation, and a clear explanation of why the project mattered.

This wasn't simply about asking for computers or IT services.

It was about showing how technology could strengthen an organization that was already making a difference in its community.

A Grant Application With a Bigger Purpose

For SFOA, the technology investment was about much more than equipment.

SFOA serves French-speaking autistic children and families through programs including speech-language programming, adapted recreation and respite activities, and summer camps. Its current website reports that 108 autistic children participated in its programs during 2025–2026, with 57 sessions and 280 hours of programming delivered.

When an organization is supporting that many people, reliable technology becomes part of the infrastructure behind the mission.

Technology helps organizations manage information, communicate, coordinate programs, protect data, support staff and volunteers, and continue serving their communities.

That is why nonprofit technology funding can have an impact far beyond the technology itself.

After months of work, preparation, meetings, information gathering, and waiting, the moment finally arrived.

December 8, 2025.

SFOA had been approved for the grant.

For SFOA, this wasn't simply a funding announcement.

It meant the organization could begin moving toward a stronger technology foundation without having to rely solely on its limited reserves or volunteers.

For Heartfelt IT, it was a moment that reinforced why we believe technology should be accessible to organizations doing meaningful work in their communities.

From Ontario Trillium Foundation Funding to Real Impact

Winning an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant was not the end of the story.

It was the beginning.

With the funding secured, Heartfelt IT began working with SFOA to turn its technology needs into practical improvements that could support the organization's mission and its growing community.

One of the visible results of this work is SFOA's current website.

A website is often the first place families, community members, volunteers, and potential supporters go to learn about an organization. For SFOA, having a modern and accessible online presence was an important part of creating a stronger digital foundation.

Heartfelt IT was proud to be involved in the work behind SFOA's current website, helping create an online presence that better reflects who SFOA is, the communities it serves, and the programs and services it provides.

But the work goes beyond what visitors see online.

The broader goal is to help SFOA build a technology environment that can support its team, protect its information, improve efficiency, and provide a stronger foundation for delivering programs and services.

What We Did

• Migrated SFOA’s organization setup from Google to Microsoft Cloud, improving collaboration, communication, and productivity across the team.

• Implemented stronger cybersecurity standards to protect sensitive information and safeguard program participants’ data.

• Provided new laptops to equip the team with reliable technology and better support the delivery of community services.

• Purchased multimedia equipment to expand SFOA’s programs, enhance engagement, and strengthen its impact within the community.

This is what makes technology funding so meaningful for nonprofit organizations.

It isn't simply about purchasing computers, improving a website, or updating technology.

It's about giving organizations the tools they need to spend more energy on their mission and less time working around technology limitations.

For SFOA, the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant created an opportunity to begin making those long-term improvements.

And for Heartfelt IT, being part of that transformation has been incredibly rewarding.
