Kanata E-Waste Collection: A Heartfelt Success and a Sustainable Future
Community action and environmental stewardship came together this spring for a landmark event in our local tech landscape. From April 21–25, the Kanata community joined forces for our inaugural E-Waste Collection Week, and the results were nothing short of inspiring.
At Heartfelt IT, our mission has always been to bridge the gap between high-level technology and community support. By partnering with the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA), we aimed to provide a secure, responsible, and impactful way for residents and businesses to dispose of their "retired" technology.
Event Highlights: 750 lbs of Impact
We are thrilled to announce that our first E-Waste event was a resounding success! Thanks to the generosity and environmental consciousness of the Kanata community, we diverted a significant amount of electronic waste from local landfills.
During the week of April 21-25, we successfully collected:
18 Laptops
4 Desktop PCs
1 Tablet
2 High-Resolution Monitors
1 Projector
4 Printers
40 Hard Drives (HDD)
1 Enterprise Server
Altogether, this resulted in a confirmed weight of 750 lbs of electronic equipment. We are truly grateful and heartfelt toward everyone who participated. Seeing the community come together to ensure these devices are handled properly is exactly why we started this initiative.
Supporting a Reuse-First Approach
When it comes to electronics recycling in Kanata, the "Standard" approach is often to break down devices for scrap metal. However, as part of our commitment to sustainability and Digital Equity, we utilize a Reuse-First Model.
Why Reuse Matters More Than Recycling
Recycling is good, but reuse is better. Manufacturing a single computer requires a massive amount of water, electricity, and rare earth minerals. By extending the life of a device, we drastically reduce its carbon footprint.
Through our partnership with ERA, your donations follow this path:
Refurbishment: Functional devices are professionally cleaned, repaired, and updated to modern standards.
Charitable Donation: These refurbished units are prepared for reuse by charities, local schools, and non-profit organizations that need technology to fulfill their missions.
Responsible Recycling: Only equipment that is truly non-functional or obsolete beyond repair is sent for material recovery, ensuring that heavy metals like lead and mercury do not end up in our soil or water.
Secure Data Destruction: Peace of Mind for Kanata Businesses
The biggest barrier to recycling old computers is often data anxiety. Many businesses and individuals have "tech graveyards" in their closets simply because they are afraid of their personal information falling into the wrong hands.
At Heartfelt IT, data security is a core component of every initiative. During the event, we ensured that every participant could recycle with total confidence:
Secure Handling: From the moment a device was dropped off, it was placed in a secure chain of custody.
Industry Standards: Our processing aligns with the highest industry standards for data destruction.
Wiping and Destruction: All 40 hard drives and the enterprise server collected are undergoing rigorous data sanitization processes to ensure that sensitive information is permanently unrecoverable.
For organizations in Kanata, this means you can fulfill your environmental responsibilities without compromising your corporate security.

The Environmental Impact of Your Donation
750 lbs might just seem like a number, but its impact on the environment is measurable. Electronic waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. It contains toxic substances that, if left in a landfill, can leach into the groundwater.
By participating in our April event, you didn't just clear out your office; you prevented hazardous materials from entering the environment and helped provide "new-to-them" technology to those who might otherwise be left behind in the digital age.
Building a Circular Economy in Kanata
This event is just the beginning. We are working to create a circular economy right here in our community. In this model, technology is shared, repaired, and reused for as long as possible. When a device finally reaches the end of its life, its components are harvested to create something new.
Looking Forward: What’s Next for Heartfelt IT?
The success of this event has proven that Kanata is ready for a more sustainable approach to IT. Because of the overwhelming support, we are already looking at future dates for our next collection drive.
How you can stay involved:
Audit Your Tech: Don't let old laptops sit in a drawer. If you missed this event, stay tuned for our next one.
Spread the Word: Tell your business partners and neighbors about the importance of "Reuse-First" recycling.
Join the Movement: Follow Heartfelt IT for updates on our Laptop Giveaway Program and other community-focused IT initiatives.
We want to extend a final, massive thank you to everyone who participated. Your contribution—whether it was a single tablet or a heavy enterprise server—made a difference. Together, we are proving that technology can have a heart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my data really gone?
Yes. Through our partnership with ERA, we use industrial-grade data destruction methods. Whether it's through software wiping or physical shredding, the data is rendered 100% unrecoverable.
Where do the donated computers go?
We prioritize local impact. Many devices are refurbished and donated to schools, community centers, and families in the Kanata and Greater Ottawa area who lack access to reliable technology.
