Behind Volunteer Ottawa
At the heart of every strong community are people who are willing to give their time, share their skills, and make a difference.
For Volunteer Ottawa / Bénévoles Ottawa, that belief has been at the centre of their work for nearly 70 years.
As a registered charity and the volunteer centre for the greater Ottawa area, Volunteer Ottawa works with more than 300 member organizations across the city each year. Their work brings people and organizations together, helping create meaningful opportunities for people to get involved in their communities.
But their work goes beyond connecting volunteers with opportunities.
Volunteer Ottawa also provides training and professional development for nonprofit staff and board members while helping organizations find the tools and resources they need to recruit and manage volunteers effectively.
Their work supports nonprofits, charities, community groups, volunteers, and anyone looking for a way to become more involved in their community.
A mission built around community
Volunteer Ottawa was inspired by a simple but powerful belief: volunteerism is the backbone of a strong, resilient community.
For their team, supporting the nonprofit sector means supporting the wider community.
They believe that when nonprofits have the support they need, everyone benefits—and that every person has something meaningful to contribute.
But making that mission possible also means managing the everyday realities of running a nonprofit organization.
When technology becomes another challenge
Like many small nonprofits, Volunteer Ottawa has had to work within the reality of limited internal IT capacity and expertise.
Without a large internal technology team, navigating IT decisions confidently and cost-effectively can be challenging.
That's where their partnership with Heartfelt IT came in.
Rather than simply looking for someone to handle technology, Volunteer Ottawa needed a partner who understood the realities of working in the nonprofit sector.
And according to their team, that's exactly what they found.
"Exceptional."

When we asked Volunteer Ottawa about their experience working with Heartfelt IT, their answer was simple:
"Exceptional."
They described the Heartfelt IT team as responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely understanding of the realities of working in the nonprofit sector.
For a small team, having someone who is prompt, kind, and ready to help makes a meaningful difference.
But what stood out most was the importance of having an IT partner who understands the organization—not just the technology.
"Find someone who understands your mission, not just your technology."
That's the advice Volunteer Ottawa would give to other organizations looking for a reliable IT partner.
For them, understanding the nonprofit context matters.
It means understanding budget constraints, lean teams, and the importance of finding practical solutions.
And that's what makes the partnership work.
Technology is important, but it should ultimately support the mission—not become another obstacle standing in its way.
Looking ahead
Volunteer Ottawa has plenty happening as they continue their work in the community.
They recently launched the Diverse Leaders in Ottawa (DLO) Portal, which connects nonprofits with talented individuals ready to contribute to board leadership.
They're also preparing for their Fall Volunteer Expo and the VOscars, their annual volunteer recognition gala.
And one of their most exciting initiatives is the Ottawa Youth Service Year (OYSY).
Volunteer Ottawa is serving as the backbone organization for this first-of-its-kind paid youth service program, launching in September 2026. The program was founded by the Honourable Dalton McGuinty and is funded by The Rideau Hall Foundation.
For Volunteer Ottawa, it's another opportunity to bring people together, create meaningful experiences, and strengthen the community they serve.
A partnership that supports the mission
Volunteer Ottawa's story is ultimately about people.
It's about volunteers looking for meaningful ways to contribute, nonprofits working to serve their communities, and the organizations and people helping make those connections possible.
At Heartfelt IT, we're proud to support Volunteer Ottawa behind the scenes so their team can continue focusing on what matters most: strengthening the nonprofit and volunteer community in Ottawa.
We're grateful to Volunteer Ottawa for sharing their story with us and for allowing us to be part of their journey.
