How TELUS Empowers Indigenous-Led Innovation Through Funding

In an age where technology drives education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, many Indigenous communities across Canada continue to face significant barriers to digital access. The TELUS Indigenous Communities Fund (ICF) is working to change that—by supporting Indigenous-led digital bridge projects designed to improve connectivity, empower local initiatives, and drive reconciliation through technology.

What Is the TELUS Indigenous Communities Fund?

The Indigenous Communities Fund, offered by TELUS, provides grants between $5,000 and $25,000 to support projects that create meaningful, measurable change in Indigenous communities. The fund is part of TELUS' broader social impact and reconciliation efforts, and specifically encourages the use of technology to overcome long-standing infrastructure and access challenges.

Eligible projects often focus on:

  • Digital inclusion
  • Mental health and wellness
  • Cultural revitalization
  • Education and skill-building
  • Economic empowerment

Whether it’s providing laptops for remote learning or extending high-speed internet to underserved areas, the fund helps ensure Indigenous communities are equipped to thrive in a connected world.

Who Can Apply?

To receive funding from the TELUS Indigenous Communities Fund, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria:

  • Indigenous-led organizations: including Band Councils, Indigenous governments, community groups, and non-profits.

  • Non-Indigenous organizations: may apply if they demonstrate a meaningful relationship with an Indigenous community and have formal support from an Indigenous-led organization.

Grants are awarded twice per year, with deadlines typically in the spring and fall.

Projects must be located in Canada and should not be for-profit, religious in focus, or retroactive in nature.

Spotlight on Digital Bridge Projects

Connecting the Doig River First Nation

One of the most impactful examples of a digital bridge project supported by TELUS is the $19.2 million investment in PureFibre infrastructure for the Doig River First Nation in British Columbia. This initiative brought high-speed internet to over 60 households and several businesses, enabling better access to telehealth, online learning, and future 5G networks.

This project highlights how bridging the digital divide can help foster economic development and support health and education outcomes in remote Indigenous communities.

Empowering Education with the Citxw Nlaka’pamux Assembly (CNA)

In partnership with CIBC and TELUS, the CNA received $100,000 to provide laptops and tablets to members across eight bands. These devices allowed families to access virtual schooling, telemedicine services, and remote work opportunities—proving that even small grants can have a lasting impact on community connection and educational advancement.

Aligning with Reconciliation Goals

The Indigenous Communities Fund is part of TELUS' Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan, which is grounded in four core pillars:

  1. Connectivity for all
  2. Enabling positive social outcomes
  3. Cultural responsiveness and respectful partnerships
  4. Economic reconciliation

This action plan commits TELUS to building respectful relationships and embedding Indigenous values into its business practices. Through programs like the ICF, TELUS continues to amplify Indigenous voices and leadership, while ensuring technology is a force for good.

Why Digital Bridge Projects Matter

Digital bridge projects are more than just infrastructure investments—they are a pathway to self-determination and community resilience. By increasing digital access in remote areas, these projects help Indigenous Peoples:

  • Stay connected to family and services
  • Pursue education and training
  • Access online healthcare
  • Launch digital businesses
  • Preserve and share cultural knowledge

When Indigenous communities lead the design and implementation of these solutions, the results are more sustainable, impactful, and empowering.
