Boost Your Nonprofit's Digital Future: The OTF Seed Grant is Coming!

Written by Andrii | May 19, 2025 3:00:00 PM

For many nonprofits, the dream of optimizing operations, expanding reach, or launching innovative programs often bumps up against a critical barrier: technology. Investing in new software, upgrading hardware, or developing digital solutions can seem out of reach for organizations working with tight budgets.

But here's some excellent news for Ontario-based nonprofits! The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Seed Grant is a fantastic opportunity that can directly support your organization's IT investments, helping you build resilience and capacity to deliver programs and services more effectively.

Why the OTF Seed Grant is a Game-Changer for Nonprofit IT:

Unlike some grants that focus purely on program delivery, the Seed Grant explicitly recognizes the importance of organizational capacity and future planning. One of its core project objectives is to "Prepare for the future by developing or adapting digital technology to deliver programs and services." This is a direct invitation for you to apply for funding for your tech-driven initiatives!

What Kind of IT Projects Can You Fund?

This grant is highly versatile for technology-focused projects. You could seek funding for:

  • New Software & Licenses: Implementing a new donor management system, upgrading your accounting software, or adopting new collaborative tools.
  • Cloud Solutions: Migrating to cloud-based platforms for increased flexibility, security, and accessibility.
  • Digital Program Development: Creating online portals for service delivery, developing digital literacy tools, or building virtual engagement platforms.
  • IT Consulting & Strategy: Hiring experts to assess your current IT infrastructure, develop a long-term technology roadmap, or provide cybersecurity consulting.
  • Non-Fixed Equipment: This is a key category that can include purchasing new laptops, desktops, tablets, and even some networking equipment that isn't permanently installed.
  • Staff Training: Upskilling your team to effectively use new technologies.

Key Details for Your Application:

  • Application Period: Mark your calendars! The grant application period is July 23, 2025, to August 20, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. ET. This gives you a solid window to prepare.
  • Funding Amount: You can apply for a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $100,000.
  • Term Length: Projects can be 6 or 12 months in duration.
  • Eligible Costs: Funds can cover direct personnel costs (for staff working directly on the project), purchased services (like IT consultants or developers), supplies and materials, and non-fixed equipment. Overhead and Administration Costs are also supported up to a maximum of 15% of the total budget.

Important Considerations for Your IT Project Proposal:

  • Clarity is Key: Your application must clearly articulate how the digital technology will directly enable your organization to build resilience, enhance capacity, or deliver programs and services to the community.
  • "Non-Fixed Equipment" Nuance: While "fixed equipment costs" are ineligible (typically meaning items permanently attached to a building), items like laptops, desktops, tablets, and mobile network devices are generally considered "non-fixed" and are eligible.
  • Quotes are Essential: For any goods or services valued above $5,000 (including cumulative totals from a single supplier), you will need to provide a minimum of one itemized quote (preferably two or more from different suppliers). These quotes must be recent (within 6 months of the deadline).
